African Leaders in Education Summit, 15 & 16 September 2010

Venue: The Wembley Plaza Hotel, Empire Way London.

Date: 15 & 16 September 2010

As African universities are rapidly increasing, improving and trying to internationalise their campuses, a new strand of professionalism should develop amongst the leaders of African institutions. New challenges have arisen in making education address societal problems. Meanwhile tertiary institutions are set up to help develop students physically to enable them to function effectively in any given environment, so that they may achieve a more productive life, fulfil their goals and attain self-actualization. The question of whether education is fulfilling its goals in Africa has no positive answer yet.

The summit is being designed as a platform where Vice chancellors, registrars, rectors, education professionals and principals will gather to discuss the current problems with African education, and also share new ideas on development. The key issues which will be explored at the African Leaders in Education Summit are the forces that can drive reform and change across African institutions and the standards and practices that are needed to embrace these forces. Also, participants at the summit will learn first-hand about current international funding and how the multi-billion dollars of education aid can be assessed. It is designed with the needs of the African institutions in mind; to help them understand the transition principles that have worked in many western institutions.

We aim to invite speakers who have both authority and experience in education transition or transformation to talk in plenary sessions on matters of general interest or concern to delegates looking at the 'big picture' of what is required to transform African institutions.
Key issues will be addressed, including:

·         What forces can drive reform and change across African institutions?
·         Which standards and practices are needed to embrace these forces?
·         University governance
·         Securing funding for institutions
·         Campus internationalisation
